weekend in sinharaja

Well folks, here was the weekend: before leaving for the rainforest, got a custom batik scarf made in the most darling house amongst the trees near Galle,  run by a batik master who also teaches the art. I got a batik done of three elephants holding palm branches in green and yellow: a traditional welcome motif.

Then I hopped on a bus and took a little trip by myself to the low country to the little town of Deniyaya, traditional starting point for entrance into Sinharaja Rainforest, Sri Lanka’s last virgin rainforest & a UNESCO site. It’s a four hour bus ride past rolling hills of trees and tea plantations, leaving the beaches behind.

Stayed in a creaking old government rest house in the hills: Deniyaya Rest House — spent a peaceful night with only James Bond (On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, to be exact) & Buddha for company.

The rainforest…just made me miss Taiwan. Completely unspectacular, and the guide was hardly friendly, but these things happen, no? It actually motivated me to explore Taiwan more when I return.
